Memorial Day Weekend is fast approaching! \u00a0Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States and a time for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.<\/p>\n

The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. \u00a0By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died in the military service.<\/p>\n

Memorial Day weekend also marks the start of the summer vacation season. \u00a0Many families get together for a Memorial Day cookout\/barbeque with burgers, brats and all of the trimmings. \u00a0We also need to stop and remember those who served our country and lost their lives doing so. \u00a0Take a minute and go to The Stir<\/a> and read “10 Memorial Day Traditions More Important Than a BBQ”. \u00a0It really made an impression on me!<\/p>\n

If you are planning on having family and friends over for a Memorial Day celebration, I found some good ideas on Pinterest<\/a> (where else!). All of the ideas have been posted to my “Memorial Day” board (Janis Slaughter). \u00a0Here is a great way to welcome your guests to the get-together – it comes from Home Talk<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and you will be able to have your celebration outside. \u00a0Since I love geraniums, I thought this idea from I’m Simple Me<\/a> was great for table decorations.<\/p>\n

Here’s a fun idea for holding the eating utensils. \u00a0It comes from Stock Piling Moms<\/a>, and it would be so simple to make!<\/p>\n

Burgers and brats are a given for the meal, but what about dessert? \u00a0Since I love strawberries, I found two recipes that I would love to make for the holiday. \u00a0The Strawberries and Cream Poke Cake comes from \u00a0All Free Casserole Recipes<\/a>, and the Strawberry Trifle comes from Deliciously Declassified<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One last thing!! \u00a0When you are out and about getting everything you need for the Memorial Day celebration, you will probably see veterans selling poppies. \u00a0I hope you will stop, give a donation, and wear the poppy with pride, remembering those who died protecting\/defending our country so we can have the cookout\/BBQ with family and friends this weekend!! \u00a0Happy Memorial Day!!<\/p>\n
