My sister, Patty Carlson Mehelic, has given me some pictures of another one of her fabulous redesign projects–a hearth room and stairway redo. I thought I would share this makeover with you. (Thank you, Patty!)
With this particular project, the client wanted her hearth room updated and also something new and different for the stairway adjacent to the hearth room.
Patty, with the help of my daughter (Laura Dooley), personalized the stairway space by adding framed photographs of the client’s daughters, a custom burlap plaque with the clients’ wedding year, a candle sconce and metal brown and gold “sea urchins” to add dimension to the wall.
The console table next to the stairway was updated by replacing the plain silver lamp with a more interesting glass and wood lamp. A custom orchid floral arrangement made by Patty was also added as well as a distressed photo frame. The client’s woven baskets were kept on the shelf of the table to provide for storage.
In the hearth room, updated wing chairs from Best Home Furnishings were placed on each side the of fireplace. (The chair is the Lorette chair). The area was anchored with a rug (Scroll Tile) from Pottery Barn, and a round distressed leather ottoman also from Best Home Furnishings was added. (The ottoman is called Odom). A tray for TV remotes and magazines was placed on the ottoman. Patty and Laura added custom pillows on the sofa to introduce pattern.
Patty and Laura also “personalized” the bookcases with photographs and accessories.
The white ceiling fan was taken down, and an orb chandelier was installed in its place. Pictures above the fireplace were regrouped. Candles, candle holders and a greenery arrangement made by Patty were added to the mantel.
The intent of this “redo” was to create a cozy area for conversation, TV watching or just plain relaxing. Congrats to Patty and Laura–I think they achieved their goal with this redesign. What do you think??
P.S. They also did a living room redo for this same client. I will feature it in a later blog.
